Interlocking concrete pavers can provide a durableand effective pavement system, but, as with any pavement, proper design, construction, and maintenanceprocedures are required. This standard guideline hasbeen prepared by the ASCE/T&DI Structural Designof Interlocking Concrete Pavement Standards Committee. It establishes guidelines for developing appropriatepavement structures for various traffi c andsubgrade conditions. The overall goal of this standardguideline is to assist the industry and public by establishingstructural design standards for interlockingconcrete pavements.
concrete pavements. It is recognized that the trend in North America istowards the development and implementation ofmechanistic-empirical design protocols. While effortsare underway by the interlocking concrete pavementindustry to move towards adopting a mechanisticempiricaldesign procedure, the required data toimplement such a procedure is not yet available andtherefore this standard guideline was developed basedon the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of PavementStructures (AASHTO 1993).
The development of this standard guideline is aresult of a partnership between the Transportation andDevelopment Institute of ASCE and the InterlockingConcrete Pavement Institute. The organizations jointlyencouraged expert volunteers to become a part of thestandards committee that developed the standardguideline and supported the efforts of that committee. This committee comprises individuals from manybackgrounds, including consulting engineering, research, design and manufacturing, education, government, and private practice.
