The total cost of ownership of a thermal energy storage system depends on many factors, including its capital cost, annual utilization, and charging efficiency. This session will showcase recent advances in optimizing the design of thermal storage heat exchangers and their controls to minimize the cost of ownership. It includes the design of thermal storage heat exchangers, their optimization, and how to leverage additive manufacturing to achieve these designs. It also shows how optimal control plays a key part in cost-effective integration of thermal energy storage at the community scale.
