Refrigerant Impact on Cold-Climate Heat Pumps

Currently, most air source heat pump equipment in the U.S. use R-410A, however this will change due to the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020 which will phase down the production and consumption of R-410A among other refrigerants. As the industry shifts to lower global warming potential refrigerants, each refrigerant will have unique properties and HVAC equipment will likely be redesigned and reconfigured – both of which will have major impacts to the equipment’s capabilities and performance. In this paper, we will evaluate performance of known equipment and refrigerant options and compare key performance characteristics and application considerations with a focus on the impacts of refrigerant choice on heating in cold climates. Heat pump systems will be evaluated, specifically when we can compare similar equipment for different refrigerants. For example, similar cold-climate air-source heat pump systems for comfort heating and water heating based on R-410A and low global warming potential refrigerants will be compared and evaluated to demonstrate the differences in operational range, seasonal efficiency, and coefficient of performance at cold and very cold conditions.
