C37 — Evaluation of Trombe wall Construction Materials with CFD study

The Trombe wall is a passive building heating and / or cooling system that helps reduce energy consumption. Its performance depends on its geometry but also on the materials used in the cover and the storage wall. Although a lot of relevant research has been done on the subject to date, there is still a need to investigate the transport phenomena that take place during its operation, the study of which provides information to improve its performance and design depending on the space it serves and the climate. conditions in which it operates. In the present work, two CFD models are presented, an unsteady 2D model of a Trombe wall cross-section, which includes in the computational domain the room served by the Trombe wall, and a 3D steady-state, in which the heat transfer mechanisms are examined in detail within the components that constitute the Trombe wall and assesses the results of the 2D model. The radiation is simulated with the DO model at 4 wavelengths which correspond to ultraviolet, visible, near infrared and infrared spectra. Using both models, the effect of different cover materials and storage wall materials is examined. Specifically, the 2D model examines the daily variation of the air mass flow inside the air-gap, the temperature at which the air exits the gap and the temperature of the Trombe wall surface that is in contact with the room for three types of cover (single glazing, double and double glazing-low e) and three storage wall materials (bricks, concrete and stones). However, the study of a cross section of the Trombe wall does not fully capture the transport phenomena as the entire wall is not covered with ventilation openings. In addition, the need to perform unsteady calculations with detailed radiation discretization limits the possibility of detailed simulation of the heat transfer phenomena associated with the boundary layers and the developing turbulence. In order to evaluate the impact of the simplistic assumptions of the 2D model, only the part concerning the Trombe wall for permanent conditions is simulated in 3D.
