AC-83-08-3 — Smoke Control with Feedback

Smoke control systems with high-rise buildings have the following steps for implementation of smoke control: Detection, notification of fire department, capture of elevators, and pressurization for smoke containment. All pressurization processes, to date, are open loop–the systems do not have the capabilities to measure whether pressure levels are being maintained or if there are leaks in the system. With the present advances in technology, there are now cost-effective methods to sense low pressure. This will help to improve the pressurization process by combining the measurement of pressure levels with the HVAC system, so that maximum smoke containment will be achieved.
