Scope of Standard: ANSI/HI 9.6.6 details pump piping requirements for rotodynamic pumps and effects of inlet/outlet piping on pump performance. Standards are applicable to all piping downstream and upstream from the pump but not when entering tank, vessel or intake structure. This document is intended to complement ANSI/HI 9.8 Intake Design for Rotodynamic Pumps.

What You Will Learn/Overall Benefits:

  • Understand the physical arrange of piping systems and the required straight piping length to ensure equal and sufficient flow to the pump impeller for reliable performance
  • What piping configurations require a physical model
  • Understand the effects that excessive piping loads can have on pumps such as misalignment and distortion
  • Learn about the recommended procedures that can reduce the risk of pump failure due to interaction with piping systems

Applicable Markets: This standard applies to all markets worldwide. The standard is especially important for petrochemical, chemical process and water, waste water and energy utilities industries.

Content: Inlet and outlet standard piping requirements, when a physical model is required, how suction piping can affect the net positive suction head and its influence on cavitation, how well-designed pumping systems affect uniform velocity distribution / symmetric flow to the suction pump to achieve maximum performance and reliability and poorly designed suction piping can lead to noisy operation, random axial load oscillations, premature bearing or seal failure; cavitation damage to the impeller and inlet portions of the casing… and more

Who Should Buy This Standard: Pump manufacturers, engineering procurement contractors, industry consultants and pump end users should purchase this standard. It is important that the pump system designers and the owners of the systems understand the requirements of this standard so that their pumping system operates reliably and efficiently.
