New IEEE Standard – Active – Draft.IEEE 1937.1 standard presents the general interface requirements and performance characteristics of payload devices in drones. Chapater1 and chapter2 are the overview and normative references of the standard. In chapter 3, there are a few definitions including drones, payload and payload interface etc. In chapter 4, two typical existing payload interface architectures are described with charts. Chapter 5 is the description of the drone payload interfaces in three categories: Mechanical interface/Electrical interface/Data interface. Mechanical interface is used to fix the payload to the drone. Electrical interface is an electromechanical device used to join electrical terminations. The electrical interface includes the power supply interface and the two-way communication interface. The data interface refers to the communication protocol. Chapter 6 is the main body of the standard. It describes the requirements and performance characteristics of the drone payload interface in detail. They are general requirements, mechanical interface requirements, electrical interface requirements, and data interface requirements. General requirements include the requirements of error-proofing design, withstand abrasion, locking mechanism, vibration dampers, dustproof and waterproof etc. Mechanical interface requirements include the structure, weight and mounting position etc. Electrical interface requirements include the power supply/current carrying capacity/anti-shock and anti-vibration etc. Data interface requirements are the requirements of the communication protocol. Chapter 7 is the environmental adaptation of the payload interface, when confronted by temperature/humidity/water and dust proof/vibration and shock/mold/salt spray. Chapter 8 is a list of requirements to the payload interface over electromagnetic compatibility. Chapter 9 is other requirements of the payload interface including extendibility, useful life and mark requirements of the payload interface. The last part of the standard is Annex in three parts: AnnexA /AnnexB/AnnexC. It is very important for this standard. It illustrates many existing typical drone payloads, and typical interface requirements and performance characteristics of each specific payloads. Annex A is a table of typical interface requirements and performance characteristics of camera in drones. Annex B is a table of typical interface requirements and performance characteristics of LiDAR in drones. Annex C is a table of typical interface requirements and performance characteristics of other payloads in drones.
