LA-80-13-4 — Solar and Sorption–An Energy Effective Alternative

The energy used to remove the moisture (latent heat) from an air system generally accounts for the major portion of the total energy requirement. This paper will examine how the solid desiccant system, incorporating a shallow bed, non-deliquescent, continuously rotating, offers efficiency advantages.

Tests performed under government contract (Solaron Corporation) for solar applications will be outlined and preliminary findings summarized. A description of the test apparatus is given.

Other tests performed for analysis of different bed depths, optimum regeneration temperatures with air-to-air solar as the basic supply, and heat losses through the sorbent system are described.

Detailed information is included on methods of heat reclamation from the regeneration exhaust and its use in the total system; effective ways to minimize energy losses inherent in the sorption system are covered.
