NY-87-02-2 — Influence of Discharge Characteristics on Design of Chilled Water Storage

Recently published results of a laboratory evaluation of stratified chilled water storage techniques provide substantial data on stratified storage performance that is useful in storage design. This paper presents, with examples, some design considerations in using stratified chilled water” storage in a typical office building. A design day cooling load is developed for a typical building. The influence of storage performance, particularly the discharge temperature characteristic, is discussed relative to storage strategy, sizing of chiller and storage system, and the chilled water distribution.
