Buildings are designed to house and protect people, property, and activities. As the industry’s attention is increasingly drawn toward building performance, we recognize that how buildings are operated has a greater impact on performance than how they are designed to be operated. We must also acknowledge that decisions for how buildings are operated do not rest solely with the O&M team. Building occupants introduce both change and uncertainty by actively engaging with operational interfaces. In this session, we explore ways occupant behaviors impact building performance, new metrics for measuring these impacts, and real-world examples of managing occupant behavior in buildings.
